About Richard Devens

Richard Devens is a classically trained professional pianist, piano instructor, award-winning author, and motivational speaker who helps audiences move from hardship to action, and from self-doubt to self-determination. His message is rooted in lived experience and built to create real change, giving listeners practical tools they can use to think more clearly, act more intentionally, and pursue their goals with greater confidence and discipline.

Richard’s story is powerful because it is honest. After surviving institutionalization, abuse, poverty, massive debt, and severe depression, he developed a perspective centered on human potential, personal responsibility, and the power of focused action. Instead of relying on motivational clichés, he challenges audiences to take ownership of their future and make decisions that lead to measurable progress in their lives.

He is the author of Martial Arts for Kids (1997). Rational Polemics: Tackling the Ethical Dilemmas of Life (2013) was a second-place winner in Philosophy at the 20th Annual Colorado Independent Publishers Association EVVY Book Awards (2014). Dialogues with the Wise Woman, his latest book, was a 2024 Literary Titan Gold Book Award Winner and a first-place winner in Philosophy at the 2024 Pacific Book Awards, further reinforcing his credibility as a thoughtful, original voice on ethics, resilience, and meaning.

Richard is an excellent fit for conferences, schools, leadership events, and organizations looking for a speaker on resilience, mindset, ethical decision-making, and overcoming adversity. Audiences leave with a renewed sense of agency and practical takeaways they can apply immediately in both their work and personal lives.
