About Douglas Shamlin

Douglas K. Shamlin is the founder and CEO of CLEANhomes, a residential construction startup focused on eliminating energy waste through performance-based design and construction.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1990 and qualified as a Machinist’s Mate Nuclear before his selection for commissioning. Douglas earned a degree in Mathematics from North Carolina State University and spent the majority of his officer career in IT Security Management and Information Security Systems Engineering.

After earning a Master of Science in Systems Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School, Douglas served at the National Security Agency, where his work focused on complex security systems, risk analysis, and performance accountability.

In the mid-2000s, during energy market deregulation in Maryland, Douglas began asking what initially seemed like a practical question: Why are my energy bills so high?

But as he examined the issue more closely, the question evolved. He realized he was not trying to solve the problem of high energy bills — he discovered that his home didn’t even need to have an energy bill at all.

That realization shifted the inquiry from behavior, technology, and fuel prices to structure. Over the next several years, Douglas undertook an intensive, independent study of building science, construction economics, and systems integration. The result was not a product, but a framework — what would become THE CLEAN STANDARD — a set of non-negotiable requirements designed to dramatically reduce residential energy demand without sacrificing comfort, durability, or affordability.

Douglas founded CLEANhomes to prove that this framework could be implemented at market-competitive prices. THE CLEAN STANDARD documents the problem he uncovered, the system that allowed it to persist, and the solution that emerges when performance — not permission — is a requirement.
