The Groovematic Movement, born Tony Evans, is a 50-year veteran of hip hop culture whose roots trace back to the suburbs of New York City. A triple-threat talent in hip hop music, he is recognized as a master DJ, music producer, and songwriter. Over the past five decades, he has remained an authentic force in hip hop culture by preserving its roots, history, and authenticity, and educating the next generation.
In the late 80’s, while serving in the U.S. Army overseas, Groovematic mesmerized fans with his dj turntablism skills in nightclubs in Germany. His first music industry experience came in the 90’s as the DJ for RCA Records rap group “Two Kings in a Cipher,” collaborating and touring with legends like A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian, and Busta Rhymes.
Groovematic’s musical range transcends many eras, effortlessly blending classic hip hop, break beats, R&B, house, rare grooves, and soul. He has mastered the art of #transparenttransitions of all genres of music, which keeps him relevant and active with DJ bookings till this day, 40 years strong. His music production credits speak volumes: as he’s worked with Bad Boy Records’ famed production team “The Hitmen”, producing “Come With Me (The Remix)” for the Godzilla Movie Soundtrack.
He also produced the underground classic “Da Bosses Lady” by Kool G Rap on the Roots of Evil album, and co-wrote “What’s Up Star” for Sweet Tee (aka Suga) featured on Russell Simmons “The Show” Movie Soundtrack. Currently residing in Atlanta, Groovematic worked for five years as the resident DJ, host, and Program Manager of WREK 91.1 FM ATL “The Technique Show”. Also headlined high-profile events for Coca-Cola/Sprite, Omega Psi Phi, the NY Giants’ Atlanta Fan Club, One Music Fest, and DJs Day Out ATL.
Deeply rooted in education, DJ Groovematic has taught Hip Hop History and Culture at institutions such as Clark Atlanta University, Emory University, Georgia Tech, Howard University, and Clayton County Schools. He also teaches DJing for the City of Atlanta After School Program and is currently the Music Program Director for The Emtri Cannabis Network in Calabasas, CA. Groovematic served six years as resident DJ for Soulfood Cypher, a nonprofit organization that uses freestyle rap to educate about hip hop culture.
Groovematic also owns an independent A&R company dedicated to developing and cultivating artists. He uses hip hop to empower and educate artists. Armed with a degree in Brand Marketing from Strayer University, Groovematic continues his mission: to be the face of Hip Hop academia and to preserve the original ethics and history of hip hop culture.
