Systems Over Motivation
Johnny Els learned early what it takes to perform when it counts. As a collegiate swimmer and Ironman finisher, his days started before sunrise and ended long after class. He found out quickly that hard work only gets you so far. What made the difference was structure: how he slept, ate, trained, and handled pressure when it mattered most. That lesson has shaped everything he’s built since.
After earning his degree in Kinesiology (Sport Conditioning) from Texas A&M University, Johnny became a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and certified health coach, then founded TruFit Academy. Today he coaches executives, veterans, and business owners, people who lead teams and carry real responsibility and often put their own health last. His work rests on one simple idea: high performers don’t fall off because they lack discipline. They fall off when the pressure outgrows the structure. His five pillars of sleep, movement, nutrition, mindset, and structure give people a system that fits a demanding life, and he lays it out in his book, Beyond Diets. His work has also been featured in the NYC Journal.
Leadership is part of Johnny’s everyday life. As a business owner and the coach of both a year-round competitive swim team and a masters swim team, he works with everyone from young athletes to adults training before work, and he knows how to get people to show up and follow through. Johnny is also an official partner of 7 Eagle Group, where he leads a veteran health and performance community, and he has spoken with Allegiant Vets. One of his clients, Terry, a veteran and franchise owner, set a personal record in a half Ironman while running his business. He didn’t do it through willpower alone. He did it with a better system.
Johnny believes people were made for more than just getting through the week, and his mission is to help them become who they were created to be. He speaks on health and performance, leadership, motivation, faith, and business, and he shapes every talk around the audience in front of him. People leave with a story they’ll remember, practical steps they can start that week, and real belief that their health can match the level they lead at.
" I joined TruFit two years ago, lost 20 lbs, and felt energized! Signed up for Ironman 70.3 and got a new personal record with Johnny’s coaching! Definitely worth the investment."
"In my 20 years in the aquatic and fitness industry, I have never met such a skilled and instinctual coach, instructor, or trainer as Johnny Els! He is by far the most talented coach I have ever had the privilege to work with!"
"Johnny is the real deal. Founder, coach, motivator—and someone who truly gets what it means to build a sustainable, healthy lifestyle without burnout. His background as a collegiate swimmer and triathlon coach gives him the grit, but it’s his mindset-first approach that sets him apart. Grateful to have him speak with our veterans at 7 Eagle Academy. His story, energy, and practical insights left a serious impact—and reminded all of us that peak performance and longevity can go hand in hand."
"Thank you to Johnny for getting me started on my way to a healthier lifestyle! You listened to my story and guided me to success. I needed your motivation to get moving. Your workouts are incredible. I appreciate your enthusiasm, assistance, and determination to see me through this journey."
