An advocate and scholar with global impact
Timothy Welbeck is a leading voice in the fight for justice and racial equity. A Civil Rights Attorney by training and practice, Timothy is a scholar of law, race, and cultural studies. As such, he is an advocate and servant leader with global impact.
Timothy presently serves as the Director of the Center for AntiRacism at Temple University, where he has led the Center from its inception to one of the leading institutions of its kind in the country. Prior to serving as the Director of the Center for AntiRacism, Timothy was an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Africology and African American Studies, where he created and taught some of the most popular courses in Temple University’s 142 year history. As an attorney, Timothy has long been an advocate for justice, using his legal expertise to defend society’s most vulnerable individuals, including survivors of human trafficking, survivors of police brutality, and the indigent. He is a trusted advisor who has also provided crisis management and legal representation to churches and nonprofit organizations across the globe.
A dynamic orator, Timothy has shared the stage with world leaders (H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana), civil rights icons (Ambassador Andrew Young), and thought leaders (Dr. Ibram X. Kendi). Accordingly, Timothy has lectured nationally and internationally at esteemed institutions like Magdalen College of Oxford University, Georgetown University, and Swarthmore College, while also having provided invited keynote addresses to major companies like 1Hotels, Campbell Soup, and Merrill Lynch. In short, Timothy has the rare ability to captivate an audience of thousands or rivet a room of a select number leaders, and thereby has spoken in nearly every conceivable venue: churches, colleges and universities, Fortune 500 companies, primary and secondary schools, and youth detention centers.
Timothy's work as an advocate, attorney, and scholar has allowed him to contribute to various media outlets, such as ABC, CNN, CBS, BBC Radio 4, NBC, The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, NPR, The New York Times, and REVOLT TV. He has bylines in The Conversation, The Huffington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and WHYY.
He earned his J.D. from Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law and his B.A. from Morehouse College, where he graduated cum laude and was awarded the Corella and Bertrand Bonner Scholarship. Timothy lives in the Philadelphia area with his wife and three children.
